North Hollywood High School’s Humanitas School for Advanced Studies (HSAS) is designed for identified gifted, high achieving, as well as talented and high-ability students who show an interest in accelerated Honors/AP course of studies. Featuring personalized, small school teaching with big school extra-curricular advantages, courses in the HSAS curriculum go beyond a standard didactic approach by examining overarching themes team-taught in the Humanitas interdisciplinary model. Students complete their four-years in HSAS with a self-designed capstone project that mixes their cross-curricular education with personal, college and/or career interests.
We are the only LAUSD SAS program that utilizes the Humanitas interdisciplinary approach. Interdisciplinary studies embody the pinnacle of Bloom’s Taxonomy (hierarchy of thinking process): synthesis, and are commonly seen as an essential part of high order thinking and gifted education.
The HSAS students enjoy a personal, family-like atmosphere with student-student & student-teacher bonds lasting long after graduation. We enjoy a regular variety of fun social activities, like movie nights on the agriculture area lawn, Holiday Potluck for students and their families, and our famous “get wet” spring picnic on the softball field.
We also have a 9th/11th & 12th grade big brother/big sis’ mentoring program that helps 9th graders adjust academically and socially to high school, while providing opportunities for 11th and 12th graders to engage in community service.
Our graduates are not only prepared to get into top tier universities, but to flourish there. We have graduates at Princeton, Johns Hopkins, Cal Berkeley, UCLA, Stanford, NYU, and a host of other highly competitive schools.
